British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
